Flip Flops – good or bad for your feet? A few days of sun and I know that all around the country people are seeking out their flip flops longing for hot summer days. Shops will be stocking up with all sorts of multi-coloured styles ready to create this years new fashion statement. And what’s wrong with that I hear you cry! Well from my point of view there is only two places flip flops should be worn – around the poolside and on the beach, everyday use is just asking for problems unfortunately. Over recent year’s my clinic is treating more and more patients with foot problems created from the over wearing of flip flops, this flat footwear held on the foot by a thong gives no support, stability or cushioning to the foot. Injuries caused by clawing the toes and a lack of arch support can cause tendonitis and plantar fasciitis . Research has also shown that overuse changes the gait cycle over time which can have a detrimental affect on the ankle joints. What should you wear instead, well a sandal that has a rear foot support and a dorsal aspect strap. Your feet remain cool but without the risk of injury. Enjoy the good weather but please leave the flip flops to the poolside.
